the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.

HIV@MSD is the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma
HIV Team who provides support for the development and implementation
of comprehensive HIV/AIDS strategies that are conducted in
partnership with many different national programs,
with private sector entrepreneurs, and with bilateral
organizations. Through our newsletter, we would like to
share with you the lessons we have learned from these projects
and activities.
This
month: KENYA
- HIV@MSD takes you in the footsteps of Mr. Mukesh Mehta,
Managing Director of Phillips Pharmaceuticals, an enthusiastic
supporter of the motto "you can do it if you really try!"
Not
content with asking his staff to walk barefooted on burning
ashes to show them that "they can do it", this strange
entrepreneur is demonstrating the same negotiation and persuasion
skills when it comes to improving the life of thousands of
HIV-infected people living in his country.

- Contribute
to the implementation of the Accelerating Access Initiative
in Kenya,
- Sell
his antiretroviral drugs with no profit to allow a larger
number of patients to access optimal therapy,
- Offer
the dedication and technical knowledge of his HIV team to
the private sector in order to initiate HIV/AIDS workplace
programs,
- Lobby
against any decision that could harm East African patients'
life: E.g, the 10% duty tax applied on imported drugs early
this year, that would have led to a reduction in patients
under treatment at a time when international funds were
disbursed to help increase this very number of patients.
On 12 April'05, the Kenya Revenue Authority announced the
suspension of this tax for ARV's and all other drugs and
medicaments, until further notice.
This
is a summary of various solidarity measures to his credit.
