Welcome to the seventh issue of. , the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.

 


HIV@MSD is the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team who provides support for the development and implementation of comprehensive HIV/AIDS strategies that
are conducted in partnership with many different national programs, with private sector entrepreneurs, and with bilateral organizations. Through our newsletter, we would like to share
with you the lessons we have learned from these projects and activities.

Côte d'Ivoire is among the world's largest producers and
exporters of coffee, cocoa beans and palm oil. Its economy
largely depends on agriculture and related activities which
employ roughly 68% of the population.

It is expected that the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with a 7% HIV prevalence in adults, will cause serious damage to the Ivorian agriculture sector which relies heavily on manpower for production.

 

 

 

 


Due to AIDS-related diseases and malaria, ANADER
, the National Agency for
Rural Development and Support in Côte d'Ivoire, loses 30 of its employees each
year
. In order to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on food insecurity caused by
the reduction of production and the loss of income from household members employed in agriculture, ANADER has set up an HIV Solidarity Fund.

"Solidarity Funds are a central part of the African culture" says Mr. Behinan Guede, ANADER's CEO.

The significant decrease of ARV prices in June 2004 has allowed this company to offer HIV/AIDS treatment and care to its 2,500 employees, and their families, if necessary. The next step will be to apply a similar fund to rural villages......Find out more !!!
