Issue 12, March 2006

Welcome to issue twelve of. HIV@MSD, the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.

Just over twenty years after the report of the first HIV case, UNAIDS estimates that by 2006, 11 countries in Sub-Sahara
will have lost more than 1/10th of their labor force to AIDS.

ALUCAM in Cameroon and CIE in Côte d'Ivoire, only to mention two leading Western African companies among others, very early understood the need to treat their HIV-infected employees.

They did more than just develop an HIV workplace program for
their staff. They braved the narrow-minded preconceptions of the time that antiretroviral drugs were too complicated to be properly used in Africa.

Not only did they treat their HIV-infected staff with antiretrovirals (ARVs), but they also conducted medical and economic studies
to show that investing on human capital by providing ARVs to employees in the private sector was cost-effective
.

In the case of ALUCAM, the aluminum production plant of the Pechiney group (now ALCAN), the pilot study was called TRICAM (Trithérapies Cameroun). Much courage and determination was needed then to convince the Board that it was the corporate responsibility to look after those contributing to the productivity and the success of the company.

ALUCAM's HIV program demonstrated positive impact on:
- Medical costs and productivity of employees.
- Voluntary counseling and testing which has significantly increased.
- Social climate in the workplace.

Click here to know how ALUCAM has overcome its challenges and how the TRICAM results have triggered new programs in several private companies in Cameroon and other African countries.

HIV@MSD was launched in April 2005. Twelve issues later, we are interested in getting your feedback on our newsletter and website. We would very much appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes and answer 12 short questions in order to help us improve its design and contents. This issue proposes a survey that our team is conducting until March 31, 2006. in order to improve HIV@MSD. We thank you in advance for the 2 minutes of your time spent on answering our questions.
