Welcome to issue eighteen of ,
the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.
The HIV/AIDS prevalence in French speaking Western Africa ranges from 2 to 12% of the general population. In spite of the progression of the pandemic, the training curriculum of healthcare professionals does not always include subjects related to HIV/AIDS, thus resulting in the lack and inadequacy of knowledge and competencies of these crucial stakeholders, who are not always capable of effectively taking care of HIV-infected/affected patients.
The success of comprehensive HIV/AIDS programs depends on the appropriate training of ALL care and treatment providers. Such training involves multi-disciplinary collaborations where the governmental authorities ally with private partners, where the medical community, healthcare workers, and community-based organizations all share the same objective: making sure that the patient will live a better and longer life in the African context, through improved adherence to high quality care and treatment.
In June 2004, Pr Y. Joseph Drabo (Yalgoado Ouédraogo University Hospital in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) and Dr Jean-Baptiste Guiard-Schmid (Tenon Hospital and Pierre & Marie Curie University - Paris VI) launched the first HIV/AIDS University Degree for French speaking healthcare professionals of Sub-Sahara (also known as Inter-University Diploma - IUD). This four week intensive training program is, to our knowledge, the only University Degree specialized in HIV/AIDS in West and Central Africa. In its three years of existence, it has become the reference training on HIV/AIDS in Francophone Africa.
To date, 306 students have followed this intensive training course and have now become trainers of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and psychosocial workers in their home countries. 66 international trainers from Europe, Canada and Western/Central Africa have shared their knowledge and competencies with the students of this program. Click here... to see more about the genesis, contents and expected evolution of this program.
The IUD will hold its fourth session between May 29 and June 24, 2007. For more information, visit their website www.diuvih-ouaga.com
