Issue 24, April 2007

Welcome to the readers of , the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has estimated that among the 38 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, 36.5 million are of working age.
Most of them live in Africa. All employment sectors are affected. The cumulative loss of labor force participants to HIV/AIDS globally reached 28 million in 2005. Without increased access to treatment, it could jump up to 74 million by 2015, 50 million of whom would be in Africa (ILO, 2004).

Through partnerships developed over the years with the public and private sector, MSD HIV Team has witnessed the difficulties that companies face to set up their HIV/AIDS workplace program, with the existing tools at their service (or lack thereof).

In a previous HIV@MSD newsletter we announced the Blueprint for Business Action on HIV/AIDS, written in the framework of an MSD/African Editorial Board collaboration to help small and medium size companies develop, implement, monitor and evaluate the outcome of their HIV/AIDS workplace program.

Today, the medico-economic chapter and seven modules covering
  • HIV policy
  • Prevention
  • Voluntary Counseling & Testing
  • Treatment
  • Care & Support
  • Monitoring & Evaluation
  • Partnerships
are available free of charge, in French and English, upon request for a hard copy, or downloadable from our website www.hiv-msd.info, with no access limitation.

In this Blueprint, HIV/AIDS is not only addressed as a medical issue, but also as a socio-economic issue:
  • The medico-economic chapter builds the case for business intervention. With a micro and macro-economic analysis, it shows how comprehensive approaches where prevention and care reinforce each other, offer the best opportunity to mitigate the impact of HIV on the business.
  • The seven modules take you step-by-step through the different stages of your HIV/AIDS workplace program. They are adapted to your local environment and resources.
The Blueprint for Business Action on HIV/AIDS has been designed to be simple and user-friendly. We want it to evolve in the future, continuously driven by the feedback we will receive from users.

In a few weeks, we shall also post a free downloadable medico-economic simulation software on our website in order for you to visualize the cost and benefits of an HIV/AIDS workplace program, taking into account your needs and the level of resources you are ready to allocate for such a program. But this will be detailed in another newsletter...
