Let's join forces to fight against HIV/AIDS!
This was the call for action of the 2nd Pan African HIV/AIDS Experts Meeting that took place in Nairobi on June 15-18, 2006.
Confronted with the scale of the HIV/AIDS epidemic across Africa, HIV/AIDS experts need to share their best practices and local solutions with their peers in order to apply them at the continental level.
Meetings are taking place all over Africa that involve physicians, program managers, NGO representatives, pharmaceutical corporations… aiming at improving HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support through the development of strategies based on real life experiences and actual measurements of results based on careful and regular monitoring and evaluation.
Major international conferences gathering all kinds of stakeholders are useful in making information on the subject of HIV/AIDS widely available to the HIV/AIDS community at large, but the smaller meetings have the capacity to focus on more local needs that will be addressed and possibly answered at the regional level.
One of these smaller meetings is the Pan African HIV/AIDS Experts Meeting, that gathered about 40 experts from seven countries, and whose objective was to analyze the problematic linked to the various AIDS treatments available, with special emphasis on side effects and adherence.
Emergence of resistance to ARV treatment, side effects linked to the chemical structure of the drugs and to some extent to the lack of quality control, adherence issues linked to challenging treatment constraints (dietary requirements, availability of food and water, refrigeration of certain drugs…), those were the main topics on the agenda.
