Welcome to the readers of , the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team.

We are constantly bombarded with statistics showing that HIV/AIDS epidemic is a growing threat to communities and the economy of many countries.

Hoping to discourage risky behaviors among the public or their employees, concerned governments and private organizations try to prevent the spread of HIV through information or "education" campaigns. Typically, such campaigns include menacing billboards warning against risky behavior or clinical brochures enumerating the medical and epidemiological aspects of AIDS.

Unfortunately, as such strategies tend to reinforce stigma and discrimination against seropositive persons, this “one-size-fits-all” approach is not effective.

How can an organization develop an effective strategy on HIV prevention, access to VCT and support for positive living? Creating an effective and sustainable response to the epidemic requires information on the target population and how it is stratified in terms of knowledge, attitudes, practices and behaviors related to HIV/AIDS.

This month, we focus on two KAPB(1) studies conducted respectively by the Ivorian National Agency for Support to Rural Development (ANADER(2)) and the Ibani-se HIV/AIDS Initiative of Nigeria to assess how the populations served by these two African organizations react to HIV/AIDS issues.

ANADER and the Ibani-se HIV/AIDS Initiative used two methodologically different approaches for their KAPB studies and yet, their results revealed similar findings among very different populations. Both organizations are now developing specifically targeted programs on HIV/AIDS prevention, mitigation and treatment.
