Welcome to the readers of HIV@MSD, the monthly newsletter from the MSD Interpharma HIV Team
The latest statistics published by UNAIDS and WHO in their joint report entitled "The global AIDS epidemic – December 2007" have fallen, thanks to methodological progress in estimating global HIV epidemics compared with 2006. They are, however, still very worrying:
| In 2007 |
Global Total |
Total in Sub-Saharan Africa |
| Number of people living with HIV |
33.2 million |
22.5 million |
| Number of new HIV infections |
2.5 million |
1.7 million |
| Number of deaths linked to AIDS |
2.1 million |
1.6 million |
Twenty-five years after Prof. Luc Montagnier and his research team at the Institut Pasteur in Paris discovered the HIV virus that causes AIDS, this disease remains incurable, despite phenomenal progress made in the prevention, treatment and care provided to people infected with the HIV virus.
Professor Montagnier, whom we met in January 2008, agreed to tell us about his views on HIV/AIDS. To find out more, Click here...
