Poverty Puts HIV into Perspective
An estimated 11 percent of Rwanda's 8.1 million people are infected with HIV. The majority of those infected are poor. Ninety percent of Rwanda's population depend on subsistence agriculture to survive.

Agricultural laborers like this
man carrying beans make an average of 200 Rwandan francs ($.36) a day, if they are lucky enough to sell the food they grow. In many cases, they can only grow enough food to feed their families.

Around 60 percent of the
population in Rwanda
live
on less than $1 day. Many people simply cannot afford to pay for HIV treatment and care.
