Decentralization of ARVs in Rwanda

Kigali Central Hospital, one of Rwanda's national reference hospitals

<

Before Rwanda benefited from reduced ARV prices via the Accelerating Access Initiative in March '01, patients who could afford it had to pay $400 (200,000 RwF) per month for triple therapy treatment. The Rwandan government is working to reduce the monthly price even further to between $10 and $20.

Olive began ARV therapy in '02 at Central Hospital Kigali (CHK), one of Rwanda's 4 national reference hospitals, when her CD4 cell count level was at 2. Today with CD4 at 133 and 23 kilos heavier, she will soon stop going to CHK since the local treatment center near her home is now offering ARVs.
