Decentralization of ARVs in Rwanda

Living Conditions and Nutrition

Many Rwandans live in mud huts, like the one shown here. Often whole families sleep in one 8 foot by 6 foot room. There is little space to store their HIV drugs, also known as antiretrovirals (ARVs), in hygienic conditions.

Nutrition is also a challenge as there is little variety in people's diets beyond staples such as corn and flour. To be effective antiretrovirals require a balanced diet but for many such a diet is a luxury they cannot afford.
