Decentralization of ARVs in Rwanda

Daily Line Up for ARVs at Kabgayi District Hospital's Central Pharmacy

Decentralization Initiative
Against this backdrop of poverty, the Rwandan National Aids Commission (CNLS) and the Treatment & Research Aids Center (TRAC), both created in 2001, have been trying to improve access to life-prolonging ARV drugs through a program known as "decentralization".

Decentralization means enabling access to ARVs outside the country's capital, Kigali. The TRAC is responsible for the coordination of the program on a national level. The project involves equipping 41 national and district hospitals and one third of the 360 local health centers across the country with the capacity to offer patients HIV treatment & care by '07.
