Hospitals that cannot afford CD4 machines send blood samples for analysis to Kigali Central Hospital

Laboratory Equipment: a Scarce Commodity
Here a laboratory technician at Gikongo Health Center is filling cylinders with blood samples that will be analyzed by a CD4 count machine, a piece of laboratory equipment that enables the monitoring of a patient's CD4 cell counts, which determine the ability of the patient to fight infection.

If a patient's CD4 count is below 200, they have an advanced level of infection and need to be put on ARVs right away. International donors financed the purchase of this machine for the health center.
